1. Backing fabric

When preparing the back, a one piece back, or one seam, is the best scenario. Otherwise, try and put the seams on the horizontal, not the vertical. If your creativity goes wild, and you use up your leftover fabrics on the back, lets talk about the potential problems this may cause during quilting. It's not a deal breaker however.  Just be aware that lots of seams on the back can create unwanted bulk on the top and can affect the quilting on the top. Consulting with me and preplanning every stage of your quilt will result in a better finished product.

If you do not enjoy making backs, or have run out of time, RDQ has wide solid or print fabrics for backs (50 bolts to be exact) in dark to light colors, as well as bleached and unbleached muslin.   These are reasonably priced at between   $ 10-$ 12 per yard, ranging from 90" to 110".  A bargain for a back.

2. Back assembly
Please make the back at least 4" larger than the top on all 4 sides.  RDQ can trim it down if it is larger.
RDQ can sew your back together for $ 12/seam.  If you do it, sew at least .25" from the selvage, & always cut off the selvage after sewing two selvages together.

 3. Don't

  • Sew the binding to the quilt.

  • Use polyester fabric or sheets for the backs (1 exception, flannel sheets do work fine).

  • Embellish with buttons or do dads until after quilting.

  • Use stamped fabric, white on white, white on cream, etc., as this is actually paint and flakes off into the bobbin, and causes uneven tension.  Also, RDQ probably will not quilt your quilt if it is full of Steam-a-Seam pieces.

BATTING

1.  If you supply the batting, it should be around the same size as the backing, that is, 4" larger than the top on all four sides.

2.  RDQ has every type of batting in the shop for you to choose from, thick or thin cotton, blend, wool, thick and thin poly, even black batting.  See batting chart below.  You are welcome to bring your own batting with the exception of thick poly.
